Although walking pace is a seemingly basic measure to make, it has been gaining traction in the gerontology world as a reliable marker for overall health and longevity for those 65 and older. A new analysis of walking speed studies shows that—down to the tenth of a meter per second—an older person’s pace, along with their age and gender, can predict their life expectancy just as well as the complex battery of other health indicators. So instead of a doctor assessing a patient’s blood pressure, body mass index, chronic conditions, hospitalization and smoking history and use of mobility aids to estimate survival, a lab assistant could simply time the patient walking a few meters and predict just as accurately the person’s likelihood of living five or 10 more years—as well as a median life expectancy. And with the first wave of baby boomers hitting 65 this year, this easy measurement could become a powerful clinical tool that might help doctors decide on cancer screening, cardiac surgeries and other invasive treatments. Walking —or gait—speed is “a powerful indicator of vitality,” says Stephanie Studenski , a professor at the University of Pittsburgh’s Division of Geriatric Medicine and co-author of the new analysis. For example, he noted, cancer patients who are “old” but not “geriatric” might be better candidates for more aggressive treatments, and similar distinctions could be helpful for cardiologists trying to make decisions about major surgeries for older patients. The trick has been “being able to turn that gestalt into something that’s measurable,” Studenski says. She hopes that her work will give walking speed “a more overt reality by measuring it. Despite its apparent variability in clogged grocery store aisles and busy sidewalks , individual “people have a remarkably stable preferred walking speed,” Studenski notes. And although walking might seem like a simple mode of locomotion, it is a biologically complex endeavor, she notes, which integrates the circulatory, respiratory, skeletal, muscular and nervous systems.

Is sitting the new smoking? No matter how much you exercise, sitting for excessively long periods of time is a risk factor for early death, a new study published Monday in Annals of Internal Medicine found. There’s a direct relationship between time spent sitting and your risk of early mortality of any cause, researchers said, based on a study of nearly 8, adults.
As your total sitting time increases, so does your risk of an early death. People who sat for less than 30 minutes at a time had the lowest risk of early death. But this simplistic guideline doesn’t quite cut it, said Keith Diaz, lead author of the new study and an associate research scientist in the Columbia University Department of Medicine.

Posted on February 25, by Karen Pace, Michigan State University Extension Pin It Many parents, educators and scholars agree that the development of social and emotional skills is critically important for children, youth and adults. In their book Born for Love: According to Szalavitz and Perry, empathy and the care and connection it enables are essential to the overall health of people, communities and society as a whole.
They also stress that the development of empathy can be helped or hindered. Research shows that relationships are foundational to our existence and we cannot endure and survive without the capacity to form rewarding, nurturing, enduring relationships grounded in love.
COMFORTABLE PACE. You and your partner allow the relationship to happen at a pace that feels comfortable for both of you. Often times when you begin dating someone, you may feel that you’re spending all of your time with them because you want to – that is great!
Words that may seem neutral can become incendiary if spoken with a sarcastic, demeaning, or contemptuous tone of voice, causing the listener to feel hurt and disrespected. According to a recent study that examined hundreds of conversations from over couples during marriage therapy sessions — your tone of voice may be a key indicator of your marital success. The researchers then analyzed the recordings, looking at things like pitch, intensity, and even warbles in the voice that can indicate moments of intense emotion.
What the researchers found confirmed what may of us may know intuitively — that communication is not just about what you say, but how you say it. However, the lack of efficient and reliable tools for measuring the important elements in those conversations has been a major impediment in their widespread clinical use. While there may not be an easy way for you to record your conversations and analyze the tone, you can become more aware and more mindful of the way you speak to your partner.
Consider these aspects of your voice: Pitch Your pitch is how high or how low your voice goes. An overly high-pitched voice can suggest immaturity and defensiveness. And if you end a sentence using a higher pitch, that can sound more like a question that an affirmative statement, creating doubt in your partner. Pace How quickly or slowly do you speak when you and your partner are in the middle of an argument? Be mindful of your pace. When you slow down, you can help your partner understand what you are saying and they will be better able to absorb your message.

Controversy[ edit ] Anthropologist Helen Fisher in What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by columnist Maureen Dowd of The New York Times and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian. Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they’ll be and who they’ll be with, avoid revealing one’s surname or address, and conducting searches on them on the Internet prior to the date.
